An opportunity to serve in the face of loss
In October 2008 I got a call on my cell phone while driving out to my San Anselmo office. It was Kathryn Dyson, an agent from the Zurich insurance company. I pulled over on Sir Francis Drake Blvd heading west, to answer the call.
She told me that they insured the Shimmick Construction Company, and a worker had lost his life on site. Two nights before an industrial accident had happened below ground level, during overtime, at the Sunset Reservoir Retrofit Project in San Francisco, CA. A young man, using a loadlifter, was catapulted upward so quickly toward a concrete structural beam, that he was instantly killed.
The Insurance company was looking for a bilingual grief counselor to assist with this enormous task of meeting emotional needs of the shocked, traumatized and grief-stricken by holding space, normalizing, and offering grief support.
